It works. Yes the seals were quite worn. Will see how oil consumption works out next weekend when i drive to Lisbon and back.

Good news and bad news! Changing the seals took only about 1/2 hour after making an air line adapter from an old spark plug. The bad news is that some time during the operation one of the cam followers slipped sideways and all attempts to withdraw it with a magnetic probe so far have failed. I may have to end up after all, lifting the head to get at it!

That's a bummer. I'm guessing that it got pulled out by the suction from the pushrod. They hang on really tight sometimes but you don't realise it until too late. Looks like you need a stronger magnet!

Google - extra long needle nose pliers.
You should be able to find some locally similar to those pictured but you'll need some very skinny ones and hope you get lucky.

Job finished at last but not after needing to lift the head a second time as another follower decided to do it sideways. My advice if you ever need to lift the head on a B20 of B18 is to locate the push rods before you decide to tighten down the bolts.

Derek beat me to the old rope trick- it works but I would have the head off and in addition pressure tested-- just remember the old adage buy cheap buy twice
