If youre not convinced that its overheating and not just an optimistic gauge why not spend under a tenner and find out?

Thanks Tysonn, looks a useful bit of kit although I think I have now sorted the problem.

Before I set about removing the sensor I had another go at bleeding the cooling system and this time I positioned the expansion bottle up high and pumped the top hose for some time. This extracted more air through the expansion bottle than before. When I ran the engine this time, the gauge went to just above half and then it drop back slightly, presumably as the thermostat opened.

Gauge appeared steady and top hose and radiator were a lot hotter than previously so looks like the cooling fluid is now circulating better. I couldn't let the engine run for too long as I noticed a small leak from the carb float chamber (straight onto the exhaust manifold!) but initial view is it is sorted. Just need to sort out a fuel leak now before I set the car and garage alight! One step forward....

Cheers
