Thanks for that Thassos, I will keep that in mind once I do some checks, bogged down with work at the minute so haven't got near the car yet.

Leeds Lad, there certainly is resemblances between the faults we are having although I have never had 'limp home' or any noise from fuel pump or that area. That is strange that the new pump is squealing also. Do you think the fuel pressure drops when the pump squeals? Definitely worth changing the filter.

I suspect that the squeeling is a fuel blockage further up the line, poss filter..But the car broke down three times previously and started again with no issues, so I had read about Tescos fuel 'waxing' in low temperatures and put it down to that, thats why I have only filled up with either Shell Diesel or Ultimate since.
The squeeling only happened after it was forced into limp home mode, but this morning I only heard it once I started to pull of the drive, so rather than risk it, I just pinched the wife's car!
The car is not in limp home mode and made no noises tonight once I started it and revved it, but since I have a busy week and a choice of cars, the old Focus will be fine until the weekend when I can pull it to bits to play.
Or I go look at a nice Subaru Outback I was spying on the Autotrader today...

Well fuel filter replaced this morning, (once snow cleared of everything), car driveway etc, so time for a test run and hopefully this will be sorted. If this doesn't fix it I am at a loss, unless anyone else has any ideas, cheap ones that is!!

Default Update

Hello all, just wanted to update the thread, I have been hanging back waiting on something to report but it seems that all is well....hope I don't speak too soon. Haven't had any more issues with engine dying, perhaps I have inadvertently repaired a connection during my investigations. I would have liked to have pinned it down to an issue and known what exactly had caused the problem in case it recurred but it has been fine. We don't do a lot of miles but hopefully it will continue to run well, my wife has even forgiven the car and is using it again.

Thanks very much to everyone who contributed to my thread, your help and moral support was very much appreciated.

I have this problem at the moment. Main stealers taking big money to investigate. They just want to replace everything without knowing what the cause is.
Did your problem return or is all ok still?

I've also just experienced this as well - see my post 'engine suddenly died' its only happened once to me but I've been advised to check the engine earth strap which I'll do at the weekend. Can you let me know what you find and I'll be happy to do likewise.

So, after more money leaving my bank I have gone 750 miles without cut out.
My Garage does not know the cause but the following was carried out and it seems to have worked.
1 Replace front engine mount due to vacuum leak
2 All Air charge hoses, EGR valve,Throttle housing, Engine breather clean out excessive carbon build up.
3 Replace throttle disc and swirl motor link arm
4 Remove injectors, clean and refit using new injector clamps as they had been fitted with longer screws and spacers to take up extra length which distorted the clamps.

One or a combination of the above was causing the problem. The car is now driving as I expected. Quieter and faster.
