Not sure about other makes of car but the Ford/PSA 1.6D and 2.OD (manual gearbox) engines used by Volvo have a wet system dpf. Volvo's own 5 cylinder D3, D4, D5 engines have a maintenance free dry system dpf, also the 1.6 D2 from (I think) 2011. I was aware of the dpf maintenance costs when I bought my DRIVe and this was factored into the price paid for the car which was quite a bit less than a slightly newer D2.

What's the recommended interval for basic service such as oil, air and fuel filter replacement and engine oil replacement?
On my old 2003 Astra it was every 10,000 mile but I got it changed once a year when it got it's MOT service. |

This "wet" system applies to many makes and marques and many buyers are unaware of this service interval risk; so much so that eBay Motors has a warning relating to PSA-group cars. Note; in Volvo's "Wet" application the cat' and the filter are in a single unit; PSA-group cars split the DPF into two parts further exacerbating the cost issue.
