Would this issue have been a deal breaker for you then?

It's understandable you didn't think to research whether it had a physical dipstick as most would take that as read.
It's odd that Volvo still allow you to view the quality of the brake and pas fluid and coolant but not the oil.

I think the 'police dipstick' is a dealer fit option costing around £71.

With no dipstick to check for clean oil you could maybe undo the drain plug and try to let some oil to flow out but be careful that what comes out goes back in and use a clean container that holds plenty in case of the entire oil supply flowing out. Always check that fresh oil has been used after a service and even the oil filter if possible.

Do you really think a dealer would use old engine oil to service your car? Are you really suggesting that the average driver is expert enough to be able to tell that the oil needs changing just by looking at the colour on the dipstick?

Most of them don't even know how to lift the bonnet, let alone have the foggiest idea how a modern engine works.

Strange that the Police require a dipstick, anyone know why?

Perhaps they feel like me?

Iain

ps I'm not suggesting a dealer would use old oil, but how would you know they actually changed it?

That's always been the case but the majority of those that do know what they're doing wouldn't mind a physical dipstick.
As I said earlier, why do Volvo allow the other, less important fluids to be visually checked? Your average driver wouldn't know how to flush the steering, coolant and brakes but Volvo still use bottles and dipticks there to let you look at what's happening.
It's an inconsistent approach. Give us everything or nothing.
If everyone's a dum dum, just put everything in black sealed bottles and let technology deal with them.

Not too late. Just get the dealer to do it. See post #13.

Is this available on the D4 engine Nigel?

I'm sure I read somewhere it was not an option on this engine.
