From the blue smoke and weird smelling brown coolant - I'd say your head gasket is on it's way out.
Do you have any pressure in the expansion header? If the engines stone cold, pop outside and unscrew the cap, see if you get any pressure being released. From how you've described it, it sounds pretty shag*ed to be honest Did you have any proof of the turbo being done? Last edited by Alex121; Aug 14th, 2015 at 22:39. |

Yea the engine should be cold, so do you mean go out and take off the coolant cap? Not really like it looks shiney compared to everything that's covered in oil and the oil lines look new and not destroy ed in oil |

That'll tell you if it's the head gasket that's gone - The build up will be exhaust gasses getting into the system. It'll explain the brown (oil) in the coolant and the smell. |

It's very rare for the head gaskets to go on these diesels, drain youre coolant out and replenish with proper volvo stuff from a dealer 50/50 mix it's not that expensive get it from the uk if needs be as it's cheap here, it wouldn't pull and go aswell if you had head gasket failure. But check inside youre oil cap for mayo, but head gasket failure is rare the coolant might be old that's why it's a ****ty colour could even be water only in there.it takes a lot to break these engines

Drain the coolant and oil see what they both look like should give you a indication on whats going on and no harm in a service when you fill it all back up with fresh stuff. The diesel doesn't run hot I can go for a 300 mile drive and the engine is Luke warm to cold you wouldn't get much pressure unless it's hot which they don't get where does youre temp needle sit because it should be halfway or just below half on the cold side. Once the car is fully warmed up. My rover I had before I could litterally cook a sausage roll from frozen in half hour under the bonnet it got that hot lol my volvo never gets hot.thats why it's rare for head gaskets not to go.

Thanks so much lads for all the help keep the ideas rolling and I'll try and do a live feed tomorrow working on the car if any of yee will be online? So I put some more questions I have in mind atm
How is the oil getting from the engine into the intercooler? The car pulls like **** so that's a good sign for head gasket piston rings and valves to be ok? Has the mechanic lied about cleaning the intercooler and that's why there so much oil up that pipe to the inlet? What happens when the fins go in the turbo? does it go boom and put oil everywhere and everywhere inside the engine? Do we think this could be a case of cleaning all the old oil out of the intercooler and pipes and she's just clearing her throat? Like Jesus lads she goes like **** |

Ahhh before you take her on a spin and a night out she needs tlc before hand , but hounest to god you look after these cars they look after you sounds like youres hasn't been maintained in the way it should have been. But once you've combed through it make it a yearly ritual what sort of mileage is she on.
Any sign of head gasket failure and youre fan would be doing overtime and youre temp gauge would be swinging up towards the red been there a hundred times and more with my rover k series. Last edited by kieran40; Aug 14th, 2015 at 23:28. |
