'Current' tyre recommendations
Hi all,
seeing as how every major company creates their 'brand' and then takes the quality out of said 'brand'.....but keeps the price the same..... what are currently very good tyres for both dry & wet grip please. I want grip as my priority and not how long they last, so all you tight ar$es don't bother giving your opinions. ?? thanks |

doesn't matter, just ordered 2 of 235x40x18 Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 2
for total of £260 inc vat & fitting etc. Going on tomorrow. Dry rating very good, wet rating 'C'.... The car slipped around a corner today, new they were getting a tad low....so done now. mods, just delete if you want. |

You are sorted now but from experience tyre answers on this forum tend not to be grip/sport related. We drive Volvo's! The answer is probably best found on a BMW or Audi forum where drivers tend to push their cars a little harder. This forum can probably tell you the longest lasting tyre, the comfiest, the quietest, the names of some good mid range tyres, that you should always change your back tyres ahead of the fronts, the best winters or all season tyres and that you should never, ever buy Chinese ditch finders. Best grip at speed, wrong place.
Pleased you are sorted though.

wisc, do you mind sharing what tyres you had on before you switched to Eagles F1? Good choice BTW.

Although I'll inevitably get shot down by the brand conscious, I've had a good experience so far from Event Potentum tyres. They're a new 'model' of tyre (from April) so I thought I'd give them a go as they had either (fuel/wet) B/C or C/C ratings.
I had a pair of Pirelli P7 Cinturatos on the front previously, and the squealed, feathered and generally didn't do as well as you'd hope. I swapped over to the Events partially because of price, but mostly due to the ratings. Tread pattern is very similar, but they've yet to make any squeal or understeer at all. I think sometimes people will disregard the possibility of a cheaper tyre being superior, so it's advice wasted on them (the kind who will be in fits of laughter saying "EVENT?" but know nothing about the technical side of cars), but it'd be interesting to see if anyone else has had similar experiences with these or similar, as they get my vote. |

The Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 2 is pretty much the best sport oriented road tyre around, and also one of the cheapest decent ones so you can't go too far wrong. It's a few years old now so there is probably a replacement int the works as it's no longer consistently the top rated tyre in independent reviews.
However yes, on here you'll get a load of people saying their Triangle tyres are perfectly good they just "drive to the conditions". FWIW the last group test I recall had a 27.7 metre (90 foot) difference it wet weather stopping distance from 62MPH between the best tyre and the ditchfinders. That's the difference between a total non event hard stop and a massive, life destroying motorway pileup. Well worth saving £200 every year or two for, obviously. Difference in the dry was much more subtle, and actually most budget tyres are acceptable for undemanding drivers on bone dry roads. Last edited by dme123; Aug 19th, 2015 at 15:03. |
