I didn't think I'd need them but hey ho.

Look on the bright side. Petrols are only 'losing' 5mpg but us poor oil burners are in for 10.

Yes. The interweb doesn't do irony. The body language (65%), tone (30%) are both missing leaving the words (5%) to land where they will - butter side down.
I've put my foot in it more than once

True.
A few minutes before, I had also given a "normal" answer to the OP's first ever query here http://www.volvoforums.org.uk/showthread.php?t=237055
So I thought he'd give me benefit of the doubt brownie points.

100K,

If you have an AWD R.... is the fuel economy important

Cherised,

I read the power steering after this.... then wondered why you were so nice there.... hence me explaining the double thread thing.

Alls good. But multi posting is a contensious point on forums, perhaps a little close to the wind, for humour....ha.

So what we are saying here is the Volvo MPG trip computer is as reliable as VW's emission test results? (heads are going to roll there!....what did the stock price do?)

Its a case of arbitary results, if Ive driven hard its 54 if easy its 60mpg. Its not real life but its an indication of driving style whilst recording. It actually said 63mpg yesterday after an easy trip back from A3 to Wantage. Cruise control circa 60mph.
After bankruptcy and owning a 530i sport touring I got akined to relaxed unecessary over acceleration driving and thats proving beneficial in the diesel.
If I am on motorway and not in hurry i'm 60mph on the cruise, feet up, cup of tea. To drive at 80mph is expontentially more stressful, its crazy how easy it is at 60, only thing of effort is to get out to middle lane to take lorry without having to break cruise see how far you can go without altering anything.

I look well ahead and adjust speed accordingly, naturally slow for lights/roundabouts rather than brake last second, accelerate evenly and in torque range (except when required of course), higher gear as soon as able. Less stress, less brake wear, less wallet loss. I also turned 40 recently.... perhaps its just that...ha.

....As Brendan says irony is lost on the web.... sorry guys trying to make light on a thread that was getting a bit .... you know.... hence the icons as a hint.

In truth MPG on a AWD R is not THE most important consideration, but it does play a part in the running costs, which dwarf in comparison to repairs to the 4C/AWD systems/modules/sensors etc the AWD R runs with.
Which is why many say a good T5 is a better bet than a R, and you can usually find a good R for sale before a good T5.

Cheers

Bob
