I have a Battery charging warning urgent service message on dash, through a meter on the battery this morning and have 12.5v and when started a drop to 11.2v I would normally assume alternator with those results but I find the warning message a little concerning, any other possibilities? before I change the alternator, no fuses relays etc that may be the cause. thank you in advance

Oh, I see now. I thought you meant the cranking voltage, my bad. If there really is 11.2 V when the engine is running, then the alternator really seems dead.
This might look like a stupid question, but it's worth asking: is the alternator actually spinning? If the auxiliary belt has snapped (for example), the result would be the same. Although the power steering would be off too. |

No belt is good, I know it shouldn't affect it but driving through a flood the other day might be the cause, will do some more testing this morning and see if it varies under load then order one if it fails.

Hi,
Got that one whilst in Germany. but it would show up, linger and then disappear. Then reappear. Sometime it would go of its own accord, other times it would need a shutdown and restart to be gone. Voltage at the battery should be 12.5 odd to 14.5 odd for these "smart" alternators. If you are getting the warning then there is likely to be some component failure in the regulator or even the copper coil... Best to get it changed. Maybe keep your alternator and get it refurb'd for "next time"... ![]() Des. . . ![]()
