Default Engine System Service

This is my first post, so please go easy on me guys!

I now have a V70, 140, 2.4lt Auto, that I purchased just before Christmas.
With both my Father and Brother ending up in hospital over Christmas I have been doing some regular trips up to Oxford, from Dorset, of around 250 miles.

All was well until coming back last light. I noticed that the cruise control was intermittent. No cruise light would come on the dash when pressing the button, but it would come back after I switched the ignition off then on.
There was also some hesitation with the engine from time to time.

Nearing home I refuelled, then, on start up, was greeted by a message " ENGINE SYSTEM SERVICE URGENT". The car also was running more roughly.

On start up this morning the message was still there.
I previously have owned a 850 and had PCV problems with that, so I loosened the oil filler cap.
This cleared the error message and I put the cap back on and it is now running perfectly with no message on the dash, on a short run of around 10 miles.

Could anyone help me in identifying what the problem might be?
I realise that this will come back soon, am I barking up the wrong tree thinking along the lines of a PCV / emissions fault?

Any comments would be much appreciated!

Edit: Sorry forgot to mention it is a 2001 car.

Many thanks Dave, I will check out your thread.
Although, I see yours is a diesel though and mine is a petrol.

I have found a local Volvo specialist, so I think I will book it in to see what codes are found.
