Changed both. About £105 the pair. Did the rear brakes and handbrake linings at the same time whilst the back was in the air.
Comfort judgement was made via a recent thread where some useful chap gave his experiences of various shock absorbers.

Having just bought another V70 estate - this one a 2002 - this thread has been very informative and helpful.
