Removing the centre box will do a little for the sound but a lot. All the silencing is in the rear one and the middle doesn't do much except stop some slight resonation.

Youll be find removing it but Id do it in such a way that if you hate it then you can refit it.

As someone who went from a two silencer setup to a single and now back to a twin, I'd have to disagree.

On WOT it is MUCH louder, I've actually modded up my 3" to 2.5" reducer end of the center silencer to 3" and put it back on today and the car is much quieter.

Maybe it varies from car to car, depending on the system and materials used, but I'd say on an X40, you'll definitely notice the difference in noise by removing the center silencer.

Tickover isn't too different though, but any throttle and you'll notice it.

I have the same problem as the OP. Centre box has rusted resulting in basically the car behind straight through from the cat. Even had a customer say that he knows someone that could fix the problem.

Thinki I might invest in a custom system from Demon Tweeks and get my local to fit it, or get a system from Pipercross or Megaflow.

Also interested in this, my centre silencer box seems to be in a very poor shape - the outer layers seem to be rusted off. No holes, but starts resonating at a certain RPM and sounds really nasty.

Do update if you decide to do it!

I may live to regret it, but I found some universal cherry bomb type things on eBay so threw caution to the wind and ordered one, the centre section on my car isn't in the best shape anyway (it now has 2 patches welded on it) so if I do hate it I'll just buy a new section, I've found them for around 40 quid.

Meanwhile I removed mine completely. Much more quiet than with a battered centre silencer. Sounds stock, really. Might be louder on WOT, though I don't know how loud it should be with a good silencer.
