Default XC60 heater always on

The heater in my XC60 T6 MY2011 is always on. Even when the temperature is set low, the air coming from the vents is >30 degC. The outside temperature here in Lima is between 16-22 dec, so clearly the vent temperature is excessive.

If I turn the AC on then the air cools, but the AC works hard to combat the high air temperature (the compressor rarely cycles off). When I turn the AC off again, the incoming air temperature skyrockets to >50 degC. Great if you want a Swedish sauna...

Volvo in Lima doesn't know how to solve the problem. They try hard to say that "this is normal", which I find hard to believe.

Has anyone else here had this problem?

My gut feeling is that there is a valve and/or thermostat that controls the temperature of the heating element that is not switching off. Can anyone back me up here? If I know exactly how to address the issue then I can go back to Volvo with a tangible problem for them to fix...

Further to my question above, could this be a faulty heater control valve?

if outside temp is 22degrees then i would imagine in cabin would read 24-26 at cold sounds right you could try calibration

There is no water valve, the radiator in the heater always has hot coolant flowing , it uses flaps to divert air around it . get a thermometer and measure the temp of the air coming from the vents when you have the problem , and then compare that to the ambient temperature outside and report back ..

Had the same problem but only at passenger side. Dealer replaced damper motor.

Thanks for that pointer.... I measured the temperature across a range of conditions:

Outside: 12-21 degC
Inside (at vent): 32-50 degC

So clearly the car is heating the air.... Sounds like a problem with the flap controls?

Hi Clan, are you able to suggest any other pointers here? Is it likely to be a problem with the thermostat, or the flaps themselves?

Many thanks
Jon

a rare problem but most likely a temperature flap motor ? There are two , one for each side which can be set to different temperatures , if both are playing up it won't be a motor maybe a sensor ? Fault codes should lead to the clue ...

I would suggest it is flap motor(s) - if it was the temperature sensor the AC wouldn't be trying to combat the heater. Also not any sort of thermostat as that would cause no heating or other issues.
