A VVT is a rattle every second or so and will stop for you disconnect the power supply to the VVT solenoid which depending on your car will be in the intake or exhaust side. I changed my VVT and it fixed my problem. I got an amazing deal £62 for the VVT on. 30 percent discount day at eurocarparts online and it is a genuine Aisin. I got the tools I needed and marked everything meticulously and got the job done over a long weekend. I returned some of the tools a I have decided that other than servicing I no longer want to carry out repairs myself. It's just too much to learn everytime something doesn't work and I always feel nervous that I am have missed something or put something back the wrong way. If a garage quotes me silly money then I may look up the job myself but if it's not going to cost me a lot I would just let them take care of it, especially seatbelt, airbags and brakes. If you are patient and precise, you can tackle a VVT job. Test the solenoid power cable by disconnecting it first though as it may not be that.
