Thanks!

Well it did fail! Although the remedy took about 2 seconds. It failed because it had the dipped beam coming on as soon as you'd switch the ignition on. All that needed doing was move the tiny adjuster on the light switch itself and switch it from Scandinavian mode to normal mode where the lights are switched on manually.

The MOT tester said that he hadn't seen a car this clean for a while (and they do see a lot of 3 year old cars). Apparently he couldn't notice any rust (and that doesn't surprise me).

As I was being lazy, I had them (Volvo specialist) do the brake fluid change, timing belt kit including water pump and coolant change and the accessory drivebelt. I went for the genuine Volvo coolant and the belt kits were both Gates.

On a side note, I still can't believe in 16 years it never needed the A/C refrigerant top-up! Just goes to show how reliable these cars are.

The Michelin CrossClimate tyres are lovely, it was a good choice and apparently they are also great in the winter.

I also found my Hugh Laurie CD (I thought I had lost it ages ago and it had been sitting in the CD player for the last 2 or 2.5 years!

That's odd about the fail on the headlamps isn't it? Both my 850 & V70's headlamps do the same as yours did. I've never switched the 850's off & there is not that little screw to adjust on my V70 (ph2).

Anyways, glad you got the ticket with ease & I reckon you have a 'keeper' there
Oh & welcome to the fold

Welcome to the world of the sensible motorist who becomes a Volvo lover!

Like Paul, my headlights are on dip from when I start the car (thanks to that little screwdriver slot on the switch) and I've never been failed on that point. After all, Volvo was the company that was at the forefront of Daytime Running Lights (despite all the jokes Jasper Carrot used to make about them).

Methinks your local MoT place is not switched on properly?

They actually are as it IS a failure because you can't select just the sidelights on their own (when you turn the switch to the first position it still has the dipped beam on). Legally they had to fail it.
They didn't make any fuss, asked for my permission to switch it back to 'non-Scandinavian' mode for the free retest and then asked if I would like the lights back on the setting I had them on. All by the book.

I love the Volvo and I've just spent nearly £1000 on new tyres + preventive maintenance etc. Th issue is we may need to find a new home for it :-(
I'm 6ft7 and after driving it back-to-back with our other 'larger' car the Volvo seems small (legroom). It's really annoying as the Mercedes W211 E320 CDI estate has done 4.3x the mileage (approaching 185K) and is showing signs of rust etc.
