1.8 GDI parts
Does anybody know where I may get a new camshaft and followers for my engine?
The tappets sometimes rattle and sometimes don't. I have put some engine flush in and will run it for a couple of days with it in (I only do a maximum of 5 miles a day). Will try this first, but ultimately looking at a possible camshaft and doobries (followers).

Can't help but hope your lucky - nice mileage though!
Would probably benefit from a good thrash as well. GDi heaven

Just bung another engine in. At 221,000 miles its not really worth putting money into that one when a replacement could be bought cheaper.

2001 was the changeover year from the previous B4184SM engine to the later B4184SJ. The main reason for the change was very very noisy tappets and perhaps the only main change or difference was that the tappets were redesigned to run a lot more quiet......whether this had an effect or not i don`t know but my early 1998 SM model was really terrible noisy. I used the additive for noisy lifters but made no difference as it was the design of the tappet! I have heard of owners having the later engine not really happy about the still tappet noise so whether it was completely successful change i don`t know. The most useful thing i did do was because the Mitsubishi engine is direct injection and with no VVT the oil i used was Castrol Magnetec 10W 40 which made it a lot quieter .....but that was all that i could do about the noise. If you want to get replaced those parts best go to a Mitsubishi Dealer as Volvo are completely useless at the model......

Thanks for the feedback guys. I am very grateful for your opinions and advice. I have ALWAYS driven it like I have just stolen it and yes, it thrives on it.
I did a 112 mile journey in the early hours 18 months ago at between a ton and a ton and a quarter. It goes really well and I cannot justify changing the good engine for an unknown one. Just for future reference guys. The engine flush that I have put into it is Unipart degreaser 2 litres of it. Guess what? It has stopped the tappets from making a noise so I shall drain it on Monday and refill with some 'normal' classic 20/50 oil and see how it gets on. I have done 5000 miles since its last service so it is overdue for another.

I think the biggest problem will be that the GDI wasn't a very common engine and not extally the best reputation for reliability. ( This is mostly down to the fact most drivers have no idea how to look after an engine) most of the cars in the UK you found the engine have been in the cheap motoring land for some time, there are going to be few of these around for parts or companies that will hold stock.
Try Mitsubishi for followers maybe a cam will be eye watering new from them i'm sure. The only other option is depending on how you feel about pulling apart an engine is to find a new low mile one on eBay/local breakers yard. It won't cost you a lot since they are not extally going to fly off the shelves then pull it apart see how things look and either rob bits or if the engine is good drop it in. 220k is impressive from most engines to get to just goes to show regular servicing and an Italian tuneup every now and again does wonders. |
