I am kind of thinking on this one & I admit I hate the new generation Volvo's, they lack well let us say they lack Swedishness!

I keep looking at newer V70 D5's but I just cant part with my older one. My friends / work colleuges / family etc are all amazed at how my 740 just keeps on going.

This question should be a no brainer. Get the old ones repaired, after all, with an older car you:

- dont have to worry about finance agreements
- dont have to get ripped off by main dealers
- Servicing is cheap
- Maintainence can be done yourself
- Insurance is generally pretty cheap
- Bulletproof reliability in older volvo's, unlike newer models.
and finally, because its an old volvo, chances of it getting stolen are LOW!

That pretty much sums up why i keep my old one, as oppesed to getting a newer one. At the end of the day, keeping a car on the road isnt getting any cheaper, and as the old saying goes "If it aint broke, dont fix it"

Hi,

Another advantage is that the pre emissions rated cars are paying £175 road tax and you'll miss out on a hefty annual bil..

I would suggest you get the car looked at by a garage you trust before splashing out lots of cash on the bodywork.

The North East of England is especially tough on car bodywork. I don't know why, It has the same North Sea and winds hitting it as the East coast of Scotland but for some reasons it appears to affect cars more there. It's not because the owners care any less for their cars just something in the air (I used to live there so have first hand experience of this).

Get the car checked out structurally and if OK, spend the money, otherwise, if you like your older vintage Volvo, check out places like autotrader and source one from down South where the environment has been a bit kinder.

Take someone who knows a bit about cars to help you out if you're not sure. Let's face it, there aren't too many older Volvo's which have had the Vauxhall Nova treatment and if it has, walk away.
