I will say turbo oil seals

I had that with my hilux surf, it was running a supra ct20a turbo charger

Or the piston rings are gone, is it drinking oil?

Possibly turbo seals but could be leaky injectors too. Very unlikely to be the rings. When is it smoking most?

Not common on the tdi at all really but possible. It all depends on when he's experiencing the smoke really.

Easy to rule out the turbo, just remove the intercooler pipe that goes into the inlet manifold and start it up. If the turbo is knackered the blue smoke will stop.

If you still have smoke it could be the stem seals or the injectors.

My hilux blew seals on the exhaust side so it always showed smoke even if it was disconnected
