Default VoC button in car

What happens when you hit the VoC button in the car? Is it just a standard phone call with lift music until connected etc? How long does it take to get answered? Just curious as technically I may never need it (fingers crossed!). Does it go to a voice recognition/DTMF menu system first or just direct to a human?

After actuating the ejector seat you mean?

Seriously, it has its own modem that dials up the Volvo call centre for help. Its a human on the other side that helps you if they can and sends a mechanic or recovery to you. The SOS button does the same but has a higher priority and may send emergency services to your aid. If airbags are deployed I believe the car automatically sends an SOS to get emergency services to you. In all cases the system on the other side will know your position and this will be sent to the relevant services.

This VOC modem is quite independent of whether you have a car wi-fi and data modem in the boot. If you have one of those active, I think the VOC system uses yours rather then Volvo's modem for everything, no doubt to transfer the data cost from them to you. It isn't much data or cost but I'm sure it mounts up to them over thousands and hundreds of thousands of vehicles across the world.

Thanks Quacker. I know the theory, was just looking for anyone that had actually pressed the button.....would hope not many have pressed the SOS, but expect quite a few have hit the OnCall button for breakdown etc.

I saw a story on BBC News the other day about someone who's car *had* called the emergency services itself when they crashed. Unfortunately, when the cops came and breathalysed the person, found them to be over the limit. Ooops.....

My sales rep pressed the VOC button, not the SOS button, by accident when showing it to me on handover and a lady on the other side immediately answered. She knew which car it was and that it had already been registered with VOC. The quick thinking salesman said he was just calling to check whether it had been registered. He was a bit shocked because he said just as he pressed it "whoops, they probably won't answer for a while" but by the time he finished saying it, it had been answered.

Try it , talk to the operator on the other end with your questions , they are there for many many reasons ...

I've used it when I was getting airbag warnings just a couple of weeks after getting the car. Went straight through, they were quite useful but then they sent out a fella from a local recovery firm who didn't have a clue, and his laptop wouldn't even talk to the car.

I used it shortly after getting my car when my Voc app was showing my car was parked up 40 odd miles away when it was on my drive at home, it was answered straight away and the very nice operator told me not to worry as he could see exactly where my car was and what the temperature was at my car and how much fuel I had in my tank, as I was talking to him I had set off to take Grand daughter to school and he even told me which road I was in at the time. He informed me that now and again Voc sometimes does stick at a previous destination point for a while but it always catches up, it did the following day. It's only done this once since I think and corrected in a few hours. I say think because I rearly check now the novelty has worn off.
