Default Speedometer, Odometer problems

Hi

V40 2003 1.6i petrol.

My Speedometer and odometer don’t work sometimes.
The speedometer drops to 0 and odometer doesn’t register any Kilometres.
It happens for about 2 or 3 minutes then starts working again.
It happening on a more regular basis.

No lights are on (engine, ABS etc)
No error codes on Torque app.
The car’s speed is being displayed on the Torque app.

So a couple of questions for you:
  1. Any ideas what the problem could be? Sensor or Driver display unit (DIM).

  2. I thought if speed was being registered on Torque then the odometer would work?

  3. A mechanic said to me that the speed comes from a sensor in the gearbox but reading on these forums it comes from the ABS sensors on each of the wheels. Which is it?

As far as I know the speed is measured by an ABS sensor on one of the front wheels. If no lights are on and speed is accessible via OBD then I'd vote for the DIM. My old one had similar problems with the temperature gauge. Make sure the rear connectors are contacting well. If they are, the easiest way to go would be replacing with a scrapyard unit (do note that the odometer reading is stored in the DIM).

For my story - I would have it do this and stop logging miles / same with the trip component for awhile. When it was working the speed was correct. I resolved this with a cluster from the yard (make sure it has trip if you already have trip). Sometimes if I gave the dash a good whack it would come back or if I went over a nice bump.

If you had a bad ABS sensor on any of the 4 corners, once you hit 40mph for 30? seconds it would register a light on the dash because it was a different enough reading from the others. I think it was ABS light. I was also showing the wrong speed on the cluster, but it was still showing a speed.

If you have VIDA or someone nearby can help you can monitor all 4 corners. Having the speed come and go though with no ABS light makes me want to say it's the cluster/dim.

Thanks for the info. The garage changed the DIM yesterday so i just have to drive it a bit to test it.
