I have two young kids and two dogs, and a V70 was still not big enough for weekend trips etc. A roof box is probably an essential piece of kit regardless of the car you have.

Just a warning that the V70 or likewise is not the magic bullet in terms of fitting the family, dogs, bags, pushchairs etc.

Agreed. With two kids, two dogs, four bikes and weekend luggage, a roof box for luggage and tow bar for bikes are pretty much essential on my V70.

Not sure if the OP is completely opposed to roof boxes though, I just recall that they didn't want to be lugging a pram / buggy / child transportation system in and out of a roof box.
