Default Damanged key

Hi,

Both the keys for my 51 plate V40 are damaged. It is the rubber/plastic part at the top of the key which attaches the key to a keyring etc. They have partly worn down to what looks like a hard plastic section, which this softer plastic material was bound to.

I'm assuming this is quite a common problem?

It looks like the metal part of the key would need resetting into something new?

Any help much appreciated.

You can buy the correct blanks from eBay, then all I did was have a shop cut it, and then comes the fun part...

There is probably an in depth guide somewhere or somebody who knows how to explain it better but it basically involves precision butchery of the original key to extract the chip which talks to the immobiliser and fitting it into your new key, the new keys are of a snap together type and there's a little space for the chip to fit into, I did mine just over a year ago as my original fell into 2 pieces, I only had one key and holding the head of the key near the ignition while turning the blade of the key with a washer welded to it was far from ideal.

You can also buy the plastic part on its own and swap over your existing blade and transponder:

Easier way is to use some black sugru https://sugru.com/buy/pitch-black-3-...0aAsE7EALw_wcB

Mould it with your fingers and it sets rock hard.
