S60/V70/S80 - In it for the Long Run

Hi

So we all have different approaches to running cars, I'm just curious to see who is in it for the long run? I think I will carry on maintaining this car for many many years to come, even if it throws a £1500 bill I think I'd just have it fixed. I'm hoping that doesn't happen of course!

So who else has committed to keeping their car for the long haul? I'd be interested to hear anyones thoughts on car ownership and their plan for their Volvo. It might be fun to keep a bit of a list too!

Had my V70 for 10.5 years & I've done 117K of it's current 159K.
Don't plan it going yet!

Had my S60 T5 since February and loved almost every minute of it (bar the all too frequent visits to fill up).

Recently was looking to replace my 60 plate Astra thing with something newer but couldn't find anything that could do what my old T5 does so well.
So as it stands I'm in it for the long haul, unless something really expensive goes wrong

Hi, I am on my second Ph2 Volvo and this one is a Euro3 D5 that I bought to replace an E4 D5 V70 (with DPF) that had a worn-out engine at about 275k miles.

I'm definitely going to keep this one (XC70) for the long run, having learnt a lot about the D5 - mainly that the 18,000mile OCI for that car was probably the work of bean counters with no interest in getting the car any further than the end of the warranty period.

The emissions controls on the E4 are very hard on the engine lube oil and if I'd realised it when I took on my V70 in 2012, I would have insisted on much more frequent oil changes.

I have now covered 10,000 miles since February this year, in the XC70, and have so far settled on changing its engine oil at 6,000 mile intervals. It's only got 88k on the clock and is hopefully good for many, many more.

Not a P2, but I was originally thinking of keeping my previous 2008 C70 D5 for the long run when I got it at the end of 2012. For over 4 years I kept all the maintenance current and fixed various expensive ancillary issues without any qualm when they happened. But then this year it started to need money just to investigate and diagnose intermittent vibrations & misfires, with the most likely resolution being well into 4 figures, and I knew the clutch/DMF would also be coming up. It just struck me that this would all be dead money while it could be traded in against a later and better-specced low-mileage C70.

Now that I've done that, thinking a few years down the line there really is no Volvo replacement for my current 2012 C70 D3, they've even dropped the 5-pot diesel from the rest of the Volvo range and there's precious little elsewhere that could even come close to the overall package of the C70. I really am seriously thinking about keeping this one for as long as I can, so the maintenance schedule will be continuing.

I feel exactly the same about my V70 2012 D3 R-Design (superb blend of performance and practicality).

Also with the ever increasing drive to pack more technology into cars I can't help feeling that repair/maintenance costs are only going to increase. I'm very happy with the level of tech in mine (High Performance Sound/Bluetooth and Heated Seats being the most valuable) and I have yet to see something introduced that I personally would consider a must have (adaptive cruise control being the only thing that comes close).

So yes, in for the long run (55K miles and counting).

Although I threaten to break it for parts when it does something annoying (rarely) I am in it for the long run, she is at sitting at 225,000 miles. What would possibly change my mind is if something that was going to take a lot of time to fix came up, I may be tempted to get another lower mileage one but I do genuinely hope not as I do love my V70. If she behaves and all things look good next year I am tempted to get her resprayed - so that shows the sort of long term thinking I have.

Long run? Get a Landy, but don't get a rusty one.

Modern Volvos are afflicted by the same problem as many modern cars: major component replacement is expensive e.g. clutch/DMF, injectors, fuel pumps. To balance that, my S60 is heading for 160k total mileage with minimal expenditure on anything other than service items (if the service record is correct). I doubt if the DMF will make it to 200k though, so it will be gone before then.

Leyburn - I have a 300tdi defender and several 2 5di transits... they will keep going forever.

I have had my V70 since feb and have done 30,000 miles in it so far. Its had a new clutch/dmf (£1000 give or take a few pennies) which I stumped up without too much worry.

At the end of August I got a new job and im now doing 1000+ miles a week. I will keep running itfor as long as it remains reliable

Defender? Far too new and complicated You probably even have handles to wind the windows down, you might even have carpets!
