Default Strange Thing in Boot

I've removed the bumpers today ready to send to the paint sprayer to tidy them up.

When removing the rear bumper, I took out the boot trim panels to get to the bumper bolts. I then came across the strange item as per the attachment. It is a block of cast iron suspended on rubber mountings and bolted to the boot floor behind the trim panel and in front of the drivers side rear wing. There are no electrical connections or anything like that, just a lump of metal in a cage bolted to the floor. There are no markings on it, or part numbers and it looks original. Anyone any idea what it is and what it does. TIA.

Yes harmonic damper , It must be a C70 . There is another one on the front left corner , The battery in a rubber mounted cradle .

Thanks for the replies, much appreciated.

I did wonder if it was that, but thought that given the weight of the car generally it would not be heavy enough to have any effect.

I don't doubt Volvo engineering, but cannot quite see what it does. My V40 has a harmonic balancer attached to the exhaust system to prevent exhaust 'titter' but of course that is a much lighter component and subject to more movement. Every day is a school day

Now there's a thought. Once the bumpers are back from the sprayer, I can reassemble everything apart from the boot trim panel, whip the balancer out and give it a whirl.

As you appear to be a man of experience, what should I be looking for whilst testing and what would be the optimum speed under test.
