I went for a cv boot split fix but then I found my shaft is stuck and the garage struggled whole night to separate it. I was thinking to replace the whole hub and shaft together from Volvo breakers when the abs ring breaks. But grinding method makes sense. One scrapyard guy advised to soak it in battery acid........ Not sure how dangerous it will be Any suggestions???

My son's garage has done lots of XC90 front abs rings, cv joints, wheel bearings etc (including mine) and only around 50% have ever come apart easily over the years.
Sometimes the problem stems from the rubber washer on the end driveshaft bolt holding water in the splines and severe rusting developing. Another, more annoying issue is that some years ago Volvo carried out a 'fix' to some XC90's that were suffering from knocking caused by wear in the driveshaft cv joint splines by squirting Loctite into the worn spline area, effectively filling and glueing the gaps, a shocking engineering solution! Remedies are a mixture of heat, angle grinder, 15 tonne press, penetrating oil and time to separate them. Therefore a simple abs ring replacement can develop into an expensive, long job. |

Thanks for pointing out. On my S60 I had indeed to push the axle back in order to loosen the bearing bolts and pull the bearing out with the bolts not fully removed from the spindle. Here's the video (notice the axle was pushied back, or if it's stuck this won't be doable) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=27a5YvRtVms Certainly not a 5 min job as you pointed out Perhaps the quickest way is to look at the breakers for a new bearing/hub assy along with an axle

Thanks for all the contributions guys , although I vetted several garages before I chose one there was always doubt in my mind that the job could have been tackled better , I'm pretty confident he did a good job .
