Default 240/740 interchangeable parts.

car made 1600 miles in total in last 2 weeks(including 3 hours in a near stationary traffic jam)without a cough or a splutter-have noticed however that half the ducting from the exhaust manifold to the air box has been awol for some time-could this have been the cause to my earlier problems????.anyway,my neighbour down the road has offered me a 1986 740 petrol estate for nothing.is it worth me taking it as a source for some parts?mainly interested in brakes/heated seat matrix/steering/suspension.it's got 4 newish 185/70/14 tyres buy my torslanda has standard 185/14-will it make a difference?? thanks

IME the hot air ducting won't make the slightest difference. It's absense certainly doesn't cause any running problems. The concensus on Brickboard is that it is better removed and the inlet plugged, unless you live inside the Arctic Circle.
If you do reconnect it make very sure that the thermostatic valve inside the air cleaner box is fully shutting off when the air has warmed up. If it doesn't, it lets very hot air through to the Air Mass Meter and fries it. As I found from bitter experience, these are expensive!

If you've got the space then snatch his arm off.
What a fund of useful bits another complete spare car would be.
