Brake Questions
2015MY V70 D5
Yesterday I rechecked more carefully my rear discs/pads, and found that my previous measurements were incorrect. However, during the inspection several unknowns surfaced. 1) The rear disc is held by a large torx (its bigger than the T40 which is the largest I have) Anyone know what size - VIDA only states its 35Mn torque. 2) My pads are marked 30794558 - see pic. but this part number in VIDA does not exist. 2 suitable options ( out of 6) are listed one is marked EXC (EU) the other (EU) I would have thought EU was European Union - but VIDA Abreviations suggest Exchange unit??. ( I found *558 2nd hand from an XC60 3.2AWD on the web) However 30794555 (marked (EU) fits (according to VIDA) V70 S80 XC70 from about 2010-2015. 3) Aware that some have had issues using VIDA to rewind the Park brake I looked at the method the electrical connections to the PB motor were made. The split point appears to be in the middle - two little tabs on the dome unclip and the sides fold back? but this dome piece will rotate clockwise and anti clockwise some 20deg both ways, even before unclipping the sides, which does not seem right. There also appears to be a separation possible at the very bottom, which I thought would be more likely, but gentle investigation with small screwdriver drew a blank. It is the rectangular piece that comes off, not the rubber boot over the cable. I don't recall exactly where you have to put the small screwdriver to release the tab but you have to wiggle the rectangular block upwards as you do so.
Then simple matter of attaching a couple of wires with female spade connectors onto the male pins in the socket. I found it best to ensure EPB is ON before starting. This way, when it starts moving you know it is winding itself off. Connect one wire to one side of the spare car battery or 9v lamp battery. (9v fire alarm battery may work too). Touch and hold the 2nd wire to the other end of battery. If nothing happens reverse the connectors. If it starts whirring away keep cables connected until it stops and then immediately cut the current. NOTE: This method, like when using VIDA or the official Volvo method (as shown in the above video), only retracts the parking brake screw internally - you still need to lever the piston back into the caliper, separately, to change the pads. I believe the torx for the disc is a T55 - will check later |

Thanks for Video link Shade Tec. Had seen that in my looking for info. I should be able to remove discs without removing caliper carrier.
Removing the motor to wind the piston is my 3rd choice after DICE then 9 Volt battery. 1Monkey600 Ok I was half right. I can see now how the upper dome bit can be a boot and the connector releases at the base of the rectangle. I found a "flap" near the top of the rectangle, but as I was unsure then where the connector released, I did not push things when the connector did not immediately release. Help on the Torx size would be greatly appreciated, as if T55 I can set a "large size" set with that size, without having to get a lot of bits set if the size was an odd ball size ie T57. I checked my tools. The biggest torx 'key' I have is a T50 and then the only thing larger that I have is a T55 3/8" sq. drive.
So it is one of those two, but I do think it was the T55 that I needed for the Volvo brakes. |
