RE: 850 intermittent Cutting-Out
Seems like there are different ways they can pack then, as mine started from Hot/cold o.k & stopped without running on at all - It would just decide to 'die' at certain times & took about 5 mins before it would re-start (similar to the sticking valve syndrome).
However, my point still stands (although it appears it could be on the HT side) especially if the relay has been on the car from new. For the sake of £30 (& 5 mins) it would be prudent to change it & eliminate it altogether. Let us now your findings when you (hopefully) get it sorted ! Cheers, John.

RE: 850 intermittent Cutting-Out
Chris,
SUCCESS - you were spot on. The new CPS was fitted yesterday and the car has now covered 488 miles with various running periods, including one long run, with absolutely no problems. The symptoms of this problem were that there was no apparent spark, when we checked most of the time, but the problem really was that after the car broke down, it re-started when the mechanics came to look at it and seemed to be running perfectly. We did think it was a spark problem, hence the replacement of just about every electrical part of the ignition system. I too have watched the fuel debate, but also because the car did exhibit simialr symptoms at 130,000 miles, which turned out to be a blocked fuel filter, so the fuel possibility hadn't yet been ruled out in our minds. Anyway, thanks for your help and interest, it's good to know there are people like you John and Colm around. Thanks again to all, Bizzy |

RE: 850 intermittent Cutting-Out
Thanks Colm and John850,
The problem has been solved now and it was a faulty camshaft position sensor - I've posted a note giving the full SP, but out of interest we have had similar symptoms with a fuel starvation problem in the past on the 850. Hope I don't get them with my V70 Bi Fuel - wouldnt know where to start with all of the plumbing under the bonnet. At 8 months old 30,000 it's given no problems so far, except for fuel consumption MUCH lower than any figure quoted by Volvo. For comparison, my previous 16V 2.0 litre Vectra estate returned a measured, not display read-out, 35.5 mpg over 88,000 miles. With the V70, I get Volvo urban cyle figures on a long run motorway journey. Volvo UK and Mill Volvo (Stockton) have offered no comment on this whatsoever, despite a written request for an explanation. However, with LPG at 37.9ppl it's not the end of the world! Cheers again, Thanks again and Happy motoring. Bizzy |

Bizzy,
Nice to hear that your back up and running. Where is that note located giving the blow by blow account of that camshaft sensor. What checks can be done to see that it is ok (or not as the case may be!!). Would you believe it but my car cut out yesterday just like before but unlike before the fuel pump is ok!! Arghhhhhhh!!! Cheers, Colm |

RE: 850 intermittent Cutting-Out
Hi Colm,
I've copied and pastede the info from Chris ref the Camshaft position sensor - hope it helps. Chris_Rogers Sun 09-Mar-03 08:16 AM Charter member 319 posts #2950, "RE: 850 intermittent Cutting-Out" In response to Reply #0 This seems to be the typical symtoms of a Camshaft position sensor fault. Try a breakers or buy a bosch one if you can, look for the 10 digit bosch part No. on it. Location, on the exhaust camshaft, battery end. Cheers Its easy to find and there is wire from the sensor to the distributor (the sensor is held in place by a couple of Torx screws)- we got a new sensor from Euro Car Parts at about half the price of the Volvo dealer, for the same Bosch unit. Cheers Bizzy |
