Propshaft centre bearing change
Chaps,
Just gearing up for the manual conversion next month. I was looking at the propshaft from the donor car at the weekend and the centre bearing felt pretty clunky so I bought a replacement piece from eBay (genuine and cheap, result). Any ideas on how to go about changing this? I can't find any build logs or how-tos online so any advice would be welcome. Cheers Alex

Now, ive had a few sherberts but ill give it a go as I did one last week on the 262c.
Assuming it is just the bearing you've got and not the rubber donut as well. And whole shaft is off vehicle, replacement is thus. 1, slide back spline bellows and slide shafts aparts. Leave bellows on rear part. 2, Using soapy water to lubricate the rubber remove the donut over the bearing, takes a bit of doing but not difficult. 3, Now I have no press or fancy bearing puller offer type things but I was a reactive maintenance guy so am well used to thinking on the hoof, so, i used a brass drift and put shaft on piece of wood held by my foot and knocked bearing off by the cape and corner method. ie turn 90 deg then 180deg then 90 again to walk bearing off. Came off no problem. plopped new bearing on with a piece of pipe (socket)on the inner race only or you shock load the bearing and youll be back at it very shortly 4. slither donut back over and spring seat on stub and refit to car using a cable tie to keep spring from stotting all over the place. Cut tie when all tightened up. 5 Beer, Beer ,Beer |
