Default 1.8i steering pump and alternator belt tensioning

My son's v40 1.8i belts are squealing, he lives quite a way away from me and, as I'm going to visit, would like to take some spanners up to retension it.
I can't remember what the sizes are so if anyone can give me a heads up I'd appreciate it. Both belts need tensioning I expect.

on my 1.9T the steering pump bolts are 12mm. As for the tensioner, you may want to bring 13/14/15mm + T60/T55 torx's. The OEM tensioners have a torx insert to the side of the tensioner that facilitates loosening.

Thanks for that, Pierre. I can't remember using torx drivers on it. It's the mitsubishi powered one and I'm pretty sure that there were about half a dozen different sizes so I'll take a selection.
The trouble is we'll be dropping off xmas boxes for the family and as my daily is an audi tt roadster there just isn't much space at all, especially as there'll be a couple of overnight bags as well.

yes a variety of tools required ! the lower alternator swivel bolt is almost impossible to access . I would advise you fit 2 new belts , they will be very worn from slipping . If you tension them they will break shortly after .

Judging the tension needs experience , they need to be very firm without being overtight , then check them a couple of weeks later .

Thanks, Clan. Good advice. IIRC, that takes it from being a 10 minute job into the realms of a PITA.
I think it was the back bolt on the alternator that was an absolute so and so to get to, after the larger belt which was, comparatively, just plain sailing.

yes the power steering belt is easy but that is the one which is very easy to over tension !
