v40 air bag removal
please can you help,i have just bought a 2003 v40 but the horn does not work, ive traced the problem to the steering wheel and need to remove the air bag to check the contacts/wirirng.I have looked in the haynes manual and posts on this site but my steering wheel has neither the torq bolts or spring clips at the 3 and 9 o"clock position. There is a very small hole(4mm) at the 6 o"clock position on the back of the wheel but only the one,i have tried inserting a small flat head driver etc, with no joy.I really have trawled over the internet for an answer but this is my last hope, being a avid toyota fan for many years im starting to regret a change in brand but im sure somebody else has had this problem also, any info greatly appreciated.

WHATEVER YOU DO MAKE SURE YOU DISCONNECT THE NEGATIVE FROM YOUR BATTERY.
If you don't you will set off the SRS AIrbag light and that will cost you £50+ for a trip to the dealer. When you finished replacing the parts then reconnect the battery. I will check in Vadis and will post instructions later on tonight. |

As it is a 2003 model, I assume you have a 3 spoke wheel like me. Once you have discharged the SRS system, all you have to do is get either a torx driver, or a wide standard blade screwdriver and put it into the small hole (it may just be a dimple, if not used before) behind the lower spoke of the wheel. Push the driver (with the blade edge running from front to back of the car) and push up on the sprung steel bar that runs above the newly created aperture and at the same time, press against the airbag, to release it from its fixings. Disconnect the two connections from the airbag, if required. Re-installing is very simple, as you just have to line the module up against the wheel and push it back in. Reconnect battery and that should be it! Remember, do not connect the battery, while trying to work on the horn! Hope this helps. Gary
