Pin 3 is your permanent +12V feed/memory line so you should get +ve battery voltage (13 ish volts) WRT (With Respect To) pins 1 & 7 at all times on pin 3. If you don't, there's a very high chance the radio won't work.

Usually the fuse that feeds this supplies things like the clock, hazard warning, interior light and similar - all circuits that are permanently powered. Worth checking your handbook to see which fuse feeds the radio, should be two listed, one that also feeds things that only work with the ignition on (or accessories) and the other one usually feeds things like i've suggested that have permanent power.

This is REALLY weird. I’ve just checked the fuses after looking through the Volvo technical documents - found that the feed for the stereo WAS on 2 fuses as suggested. One fuse (which I had already checked) was ok but number 25 (IIRC) was completely missing. I put a fuse in and hey presto the stereo works.

The thing is that I don’t remember ever taking a fuse out of the board - if I had done I wouldn’t have ever left it empty. I knew that 25 was empty but thought it should be as I hadn’t taken it out (assumed it was for the multiplayer module which was removed).

Bit annoyed I spent so many hours fault tracing only to find it was a fuse but glad it was a simple fix!

Thanks all for the help anyway. 😃

Thanks. I just want to know who broke into my car (causing no damage) and nicked a single 15amp fuse (and nothing else). A very determined but very specific car theif!!

It was a fuse-stealing Ninja!

Joking aside though, is it possible that another fuse failed for something more important (lights for example) and you "borrowed" that one to either prove the circuit or get you mobile again and forgot about it? Done that myself once or twice.
