Your car your money and if you want them go for it. I don't think bigger disks are nessesary so will put the extra cash into the tank. Paul. |

I did a bit more digging, are the most common result was the use of the XC90 setup which isn't direct replacement. (and seems to more of a mod on the P2 cars)
There was the possibility of just using the caliper carrier from the larger V70 setup but the caliper part number is different and I cant get clarification if the carrier alone would work. The best bet would be caliper and carrier from a V70 with the larger setup but this is proving hard to find and I cant justify the cost of all new parts. The search continues!!!! Terry |

Back in my rally car biulding days we used DS11 pads. These were a competition pad and needed bedding in by bollocking the brakes untill they faded then driving gently untill they cooled. Once bedded in brake fade was practically nonexistant even with disks glowing orange. Without the bedding in stopping the car with cold brakes was near impossible. I ran an imp in night event guise with vg95 shoes in the front drums and am4s in the rear . If I didnot drive with the handbrake on first thing in the morning stopping at the tee junction at the end of the road was fraught. Once they had a bit of heat in them they were wonderful brakes.
Modifying brakes is fine and well, but you have to decide what you want and what you will give up to achieve it. Manufacturers go for safe in all normal situations. Paul. |

XC90 discs are 336x30mm, but the 336 discs for the V70 are 28mm wide which is the same as the 316, so maybe that explains the different caliper part numbers? Discs and pads are about the same price for either size, so if it's just a case of 2 caplier carriers and 4 x 14mm bolts, then I'll do it. |

CJL Have you tried that setup? I have S80 D5 AWD 2015 with 316 brakes and i think that there shouldnt be a reason not to work with 336x28 rotors and different brake caliper carrier.
I am due to change mine so it would be nice to have conformation that it fits before i order bigger rotors... Thanks for reply |

No, I haven't got any further. Started to research part numbers, then lost my list. Not had time to look at it properly again, but I'm going to have to buy some discs and pads in the next few months.

Keep the thread updated - If all that is needed is a new carrier, then IMO its a good upgrade. Brakes can never be too good..

Had another look and have come up with this shopping list:
3149996 336mm x 28 discs for V70 31200229 pads 8603758 336mm caliper carriers x 2 30741260 M14 x 40 caliper carrier nut x 4 30681691 right backing plate/splash guard 30681690 left backing plate/splash guard I can see no reason why these won't just fit straight on apart from drilling for the M14 bolts. |

The original set-up shouldn't fade under any circumstances, if they are you have a fundamental problem that needs addressing. I'd renew with Volvo pads and good quality 316mm discs and fresh fluid and see how they are then. If that dosn't address the fade then investigate any cause of excessive heat build up like binding calipers.
If its just response that's lacking, try replacing the flex hoses as these can start ballooning with mileage. Not wanting to sound overly cautious, but modding a safety system like brakes away from the original spec isn't a good idea, there may be knock-on effects which you don't realise. Drilling out calipers may weaken the casting in that area to the point of failure after repeated braking. |
