XC60 D5 Injector Problem?
Evening All!
I own a 2010 XC60 D5 on 98k miles and I have a perplexing issue. About a week ago the car seemed to lose a cylinder and struggled to accelerate. I stopped, switched off and restarted, all was good. It did it again, and again and the third time the check engine light came on and no restarting made any difference. I got it to the garage and it was showing injector 3 had failed but after clearing the codes, the car was running fine. The garage suggested that it might not be the injector, it could be the injector, the wiring harness or even the ECU... I've done some reading and replaced the fuel filter. Fast forward 30 miles and it's only done it again! Do any of you Volvo experts have any thoughts? I'm tempted to get Injector 3 replaced but if there's anything else you can think of I'd be really pleased to hear from you!!! Thanks in advance! |

You can check your injectors fairly simply with 5 empty water bottles and some plastic hose (for fish tanks). Several videos on YouTube. I did it on my D5 XC90 a couple of years back, found one duff and bought a replacement off eBay.
My symptoms where poor starting but ran ok when going. I could only start it by after blowing hot air from a hair dryer down the air inlet! |

Thanks Paul, does the injector need coding to the car or can I simply swap out, self bleed and start?

Test the injectors first and look very closely at all of the wiring harnesses for chaffing as they are a known source of poor running on certain versions of D5.
Vida can also run a specific injector diagnostic test. I have an early 2002 D5 which had notoriously unreliable injectors for my model year only and I've still only needed to replace 1 when I started to have problems. My other 4 original injectors have now done over 200k miles and are fine so the chances of you needing 3 injectors or any more than 1 for that matter are pretty slim.

Many thanks. Any pointers on where to look on the harness, I assume you mean the injector harness? Something like an electrical fault would make sense as the first time it happened it threw errors on 3 injectors and the dash had a traction control fault...
