Default Radiator

Can anyone advise how easy a radiator replacement is? What would you expect to pay from a local garage?

Euro Car Parts sells a Nissens one for £121.99, is that the sort of thing I should be getting?

The radiator is fairly easy to do, it drops down from under the car.

If you have a Turbo model make sure you get new clips for the oil cooler pipes

When I did mine I took it out from above. Bear in mind it's quite heavy though, I used rope and pulleys from a beam above to help lift it easily.

Trickiest part is the main bottom bolts either side, they go into captive nuts that are pretty inaccessible, and tend to be rusted in. When you turn the bolt it can rip the captive nut weld and turn. Most usually end up cutting the bolt off (which is much easier if you can destroy the brackets on the old radiator to get at it). I can weld, so I welded new nuts on and put lots of grease on the threads so it will come out again if needed, but I know others have just put loose nuts at the bottom, which does work if a bit fiddly.

Overall not all that difficult though.

thanks all. Is the Nissens brand a decent one to go for? There is a black Friday sale on so if I order it before midnight I'd get it for £79.

I have Nissens radiators in both my Vauxhall Omega and P1 V70-although I bought both rads from e-bay-Only problem I had when changing V70 rad was the top fixings for the fan shroud being seized solid and needing drilling out,rad came out upwards. No problems at all with the radiators and if needed I buy another Nissens without worry.

Yes, Nissens are very good. I pulled my original Valeo out 2 years ago, give it due, it lasted 17+ years. The Nissens been great so far.

Yep, I put a Nissens in mine, as good as it gets IMHO.

By the way, seconded on the above comment about replacing the clips (and also O-rings) on the oil cooler pipes, you'll need two if it's a manual and four if auto. These are critical, if they let go it'll dump ALL the oil in seconds flat, with amusing consequences. I also put a little cable tie round mine just to make doubly sure.

Just looking to order the right one, are the radiators different between the auto and manual? The Euro Car Parts one says its auto/manual compatible whereas the AutoDoc website I've been looking at has a different product number for auto and manual.

The Eurocar Parts offer is available all weekend, do I don't need to rush!

Auto has an oil cooler both sides (one for the engine oil and one for the autobox oil) and a manual has an oil cooler on only one side.

I think you can use an auto one in a manual, just leave the blanking plugs in the autobox oil cooler part - hence some suppliers saying it's universal.

Beware ordering from AutoDoc - there's a thread on here somewhere with somebody saying they have had nightmares with their carp service......
