Personally, I don't consider premature maintenance to be a bad thing. It all depends on individual circumstances, as in a car that's doing high miles up & down the motorway everyday may get parts replaced prematurely as an example simply because its a work horse & needs to be in good working order. I'm not talking about walking out on your drive one day & just deciding that your car needs a new Clutch when its perfectly fine - That would be a bit over the top. I mean parts that are prone to failure, like timing belts. I think the key thing to note is that critical components should be replaced, like timing or aux belts when they're due to be replaced, if not before. Having them replaced theoretically reduces the likelihood of failure, although premature failure does occur... We can't predict that though. It would be great if we could!

Whereas I, you see, have no problem fitting the same belt back on. Water pump can stay unless it's actually broken. Oil pump too. Hell, I even refitted the oil seals contrary to advice, no problem.
You say I've been lucky - well, then i've been very very lucky having been driving this way for decades now. If it ain't broke... |

The 1600 petrol in the S/V40 was a low capacity version of the volvo 1800 and 2 litre engine which is a 4 cylinder version of the famous 5 cylinder , no 1600 petrol Renault engines were ever used by volvo ..."everybody" must be misinformed ! the gearbox you talk of was a very robust one from the 240 bhp volvo 850 but the 1600 and older versions used a renault gearbox .
