Default 2005 V5 2.0 D losing power

Hi all,

I've just purchased a V50 and when I'm revving past 3000rpm the car almost goes into what can only be described as limp mode with a loss of power.

It doesn't do it all the time but every now and then, the garage I bought it from acknowledged the fault and took it back in, said they cleaned the dpf, said they replaced something but I can't remember what that was.

Any thoughts as to what could be the problem?

I doubt they cleaned the dpf, to do that it needs to be removed and be pressure washed to push the ash out of it, and it’s debatable whether that works at all if the dpf is too far gone. I would imagine they put some dpf cleaner fluid in the tank, then drive it around in 3rd gear for a while hoping that would force some sort of manual dpf regen.

Key things here are mileage, how much has the car done? And do you have service history at all? 2.0d v50 from 2005 required that the dpf was replaced on the car at the 75000 or 6 year service, can you tell if that was done from the service history you have? When the car hits 150k it should be replaced again.

Are you able to get any error codes out of the car?

Depends how many miles the DPF has on it. If under its service life it will be clogged mainly with soot and can usually be cleaned on the car, over its service life it will be clogged with mainly ash and has to be removed and sent off to be mechanically cleaned, no one does this though they just replace it once its full with ash.

As mjs says, what is the mileage. If it close to its service life the car will just be forever regening and the problem will return.

Hi I'm having the same issue but also between 1500k and 2000k revs it feels like it has a slight missfire only way to describe it have you got these symptoms too? I had a fault code of 0088 high fuel pressure. And to get the limp mode issue if I put my foot down up to 3k revs it just shuts off. My fuel filter was changed and housing cleaned out as the garage said there was sluged in there but still the same. Beginning to get frustrated with it now.

Do you have any service history for the car? DPF should have been changed at 75k, so if it’s not been changed it could well be a factor to your issues.

VIDA software would help narrow down your root cause though.

If you were to replace your dpf, they are reportedly £250 from Volvo, or £114 from cats2you.co.uk.

It has full stamped history but as mentioned above the garage that sorted the fuel filter said it looked like it's never been changed I'll check it later on see if it has anything in the book regarding the DPF

Yeah, I've read on here that originally (back a few years) Volvo would quote 700-800 quid to do the work, so people sold their cars before that big service came up, not sure on how accurate that is, but is plausible. Or the car would fall into independent servicing and the DPF just never got changed, as I believe happened with my car.

In my situation, I had a bunch of things need doing to my car, glow plugs, egr sensor fuel filter were all changed, but DPF errors kept coming back and I was 99.9% sure it had never been changed. I bought one off cats2u and changed it out last week. I know it's only a week, but car has been great since, so much smoother, no errors. I hoping that's it for now.

Check my previous thread on the issue I had, I went with cats2u after hearing a good experience from another member on here. So far so good.

Whatever you end up doing, hope you get it sorted.
