Interesting. I'm not sure what kind of noise I'm getting. I just noticed my front tyres worn out more than I expected but then again I wasn't driving the car fow a while due to being very sick. My service is due now so I'm hoping it's just that plus changing tyres. I'll let you guys know what happens after. I'll be doing engine oil, filters and tyres.

Is it easy to change gearbox oil yourself?

Very easy to change (manual)gearbox oil ,you need to remove passenger wheel (UK) and you can get to the drain plug and refill plug from that side . These plugs are quite obvious when you look, the only awkward bit is you have to use the tube on the oil containers to fill the gearbox as you can't tip the oil containers (access issue)

changed my front bearings and no change in sound I was thinking of changing the rears. My Volvo did have the creaky old bed sound and I was amazed it was just a bad lower ball joint,I found this out after changing top mounts/bearing to no avail.

So I hit the motorway yesterday. For me this sound, which is constant and slightly higher pitched than I think would be normal, starts just after 40mph. I pushed the clutch in several times allowing the engine to rev down and no change in sound. I noticed the sound changes on different asphalt types along the road. I've checked my front tyres and they will need replacing soonish as they are more worn down than I thought they'll be. Could it be just tyres wearing down?

Bearings man. I had the same tests as yours. Ie no noise when stationary. Noise regardless of in gear or not when rolling.

Jack the front end of car. Put in neutral. Spin each wheel by hand. One will have lots of resistance

I had this exact experience with mine 2005 s60. Took it to a mechanic and all they did was lift it and move hubs. Right one was stiff. Noise is gone after bearing change.
