Default faulty A/c pulley lead to timing belt snap

Hello Guys

I bought a V40 diesel (1999) last year for £1250 (had done 110k miles then) and have already spend £800 already on it to keep it going(had to re-do the wiring at the back, change a bearing on a rear tyre and annual service) (I did about 20k motorway miles on it in last 6 months).

Now it is wanting me to spend more money on her and I am looking for advice.

Basically, one of the pulleys stopped spinning properly > the belt became overheated and snapped just as i switched off the engine after work last evening.

I am told by the local vehicle recovery guys that the pulley in question is related to air conditioning. The pulley wobbles quite a bit (the shaft seems to be ok) and i guess the bearing b/w the shaft and pulley is the culprit.

There is only one visible belt in the engine compartment which connects the pulley in question and 4-5 another pulleys. I am guessing that it's the timing/cam belt.

I'll be taking it to local garrage and see what can they do with it. In the mean time can I ask your thoughts on the problem and how much should i be looking to pay for the pulley replacement and the timing belt?

Regards

i believe the auxiliary belt runs the air con compressor pump, this is seperate to the timing belt, however if you need to replace the auxiliary belt and sort the A/C compressor it is worth while to change the timing belt and tensioner units at the same time... it is more economical in the long run...

Labour for the lot should be around 3 hours.. figure 180 pounds or so excluding parts.... more depending on what is required to right the A/C...

All the best

thanks for that mharris........ yea just been told by a colleague that it's called auxiliary belt..........

wouldn't the timing belt cost something like £200 extra......... it was done last on 85k miles and its done 136k miles now......... so i was expecting not to get it done for another 25k miles..

Regards

yeah thats the one and abut 200 is right from a dealer, as you said you still have 25k to go so probably worth hanging on, word of caution though, if the aux belt snapped get the cam belt inspected for any damage, sometimes on e takes out the other... if you get my meaning....
