XC90 T8 vs B6
Hi,
I'm deciding between XC90 T8 and the new B6. I have tried T8, haven't tried B6. Years ago tried S90 T6, which I actually quite liked. Has someone tried the new B6? Maybe even tried them both T8 and B6? I like how silent T8 is in Pure mode and the great mileage possible it plugging in daily. My daily one-way commute is around 15-20km and can charge at both locations. Total yearly mileage is around 20 000 - 30 000km. Half of it my daily commute or short stops in urban areas. So there would be fuel savings in T8. Acceleration in T8 is great too, but it doesn't feel as quick as it's on paper. I think acceleration is quite linear up to around 130km/h or so. After that the electric motor in rear axle probably has very little torque left and all-tough still having AWD, most of propulsion comes from ICE and front axle. Cornering in T8, it really feels like a heavy car. Coming out from corners and accelerating, it felt like a FWD car. I know it’s not meant to be driven like that. I’m sure I would get used to the way T8 drives and feels. The AWD in T8 just is and feels different than a more traditional haldex / torsen based AWD. I have had cars with both systems. Another thing that I don’t like is the lower wading depth in T8. For other models its 450mm + any lift from air suspension. For T8 its bottom of the sill (around 235mm) + any lift from air suspension. It’s quite a difference. Haven’t tried B6 yet. On paper it actually looks quite interesting. There is a 48V and 12kW starter-generator, which provides 40Nm extra torque. Engine is 10kg lighter, has a stiffer block, oil capacity has increased from 5.6l to 6.1l (better longevity?), on rolling speeds 2 cylinders can be deactivated, it should offer around 0.7l per 100km in fuel savings. On think I noticed is lower compression for B6 engines and lower power output also. Wonder what’s the reason for that? Were there problems with T6 engines or was it done for environmental reasons? Thanks for any feedback, Joe |
