Default 1.6D DRIVe SE 2010 Noise Issue

Hi.
I have a rumbling/vibrating sort of noise that is most noticeable when the engine is labouring but also when driving on rough tarmac. The noise sounds as though it is coming from the rear when in the drivers seat but my wife said it sounded as though it was from under the nearside footwell. My mechanic is a bit baffled, he confirmed the noise was from the front near side but in three road tests is unable to determine the cause.
Any suggestions will be welcome.

Just a few things off the top of my head:

i would start by checking/torquing up all your wheel bolts, then jack each side up and checking for wheel movement (9&3 / 12&6) also have a visual check of all the suspension / rubber components.

I would also check your caliper bolts are tight and the pads have no excessive movement , also check the heat shields behind the discs are not interfering with anything. Perhaps do this before torquing the wheel bolts as the wheels will need to come off for this.

I had similar symptoms on my 850 last year. It was after I'd had a puncher and sure enough I'd not tightened the wheel nuts properly.
I'd check them ASAP if not sooner!

Thank you for your replies and suggestions. After much phaffing around I took the car to a main Volvo dealer and I am quite glad I did. The mechanic took my car for a short drive and she imediately ruled out the clutch (which was my mechanics best guess) or anything to do with the engine so she got it up on the ramp and discovered the problem was a combination of N/S/F shock missing oil, both rear trailing arm bushes de-bonded, both front ARB bushes worn both rear antiroll bar links knocking and two subframe support bolts missing!!

Glad you got to the bottom of it, dont bother using the original mechanic again would be my advice.

I would just say this. Not all Volvo main dealers are arrogant and patronising crooks. My local Volvo main dealer looks like all the other main dealers and when you walk in it's very chic and they offer you coffee and biscuits, but they are honest, offer you great free courtesy cars and go the extra mile to see that your requests are delivered. They do charge main dealer prices but I've never felt that they have cheated me or ripped me off. I do have a very good small local indie that I use for odd jobs but the main dealership offer the software upgrades and the free Volvo breakdown service so for a once a year service
they get my business.
