They might be of interest Alan, would probably need minor modification but given a lot of 240 series was used on the 7xx either as it was or in a modified form, there's a good chance any mods would be minimal.
Thank you Dave,
See my response to Bob - I'll give Volvovogue a bit longer to respond, maybe they are being hindered by the pandemic?

You're welcome Alan, good idea giving Volvovogue a bit more time, if the product is bespoke for the 240 and is as good as Bob says then it's preferable to having to modify later parts.

It has been a couple of weeks Dave, so I might send Volvovogue a very polite reminder.

Default Exhaust Back Box

I was having a look under the RB yesterday and noticed the front 2/3 of the exhaust seems to be stainless steel, but the back box is MS. It looked to be okay, but when I started the car I noticed a slight leak - where it always is with back boxes at the bottom (where the water condenses on the inside). On closer inspection I could tell the metal has become very thin indeed at that point, so I thought I'd fix it before it failed.

First I thought I might put a patch on this morn, it would not have taken long to weld a sheet over it - but once exhausts start to corrode from the inside the end is inevitable - so I thought I'd check prices for a replacement.

I'm pleased (and somewhat amazed) to report that a new Klarius rear box plus tailpipe (with a 5 year warranty) was only £36.09, and better than that Mr eBay had very kindly given me a 15% off voucher for today only that made the final ticket just 30.09 English pounds, delivered to my house.

The new box is ordered, there was no point whatsoever attempting a repair when a good replacement part was so cheap - I'll have the new box fitted this week.

I'm wondering about the chromed twin tailpipe that is fitted to the RB (see the photo above). It is obviously not standard, and when I first bought the RB it was one of the things I disliked because I thought it looked a bit naff. Over the past 7 months it has grown on me (and I've got rid of lots of really naff bits like the shark fin spoiler and the wing mirrors), so now I'm thinking that perhaps I move it to the new tailpipe when I fit it.

The twin tail seems to be pressed onto the pipe, but it looks like it would be easy enough to drill it off and re-fix it with a couple of SS rivets.

What do people think: the standard tail pipe or re-fit the flashy chrome twin affair (and perhaps keep a little of the RB's history)?

I'd remove it. Twin pipes are all right where they are genuinely separate pipes from the engine. Nicest of all are twin pipes from a V8, gently burbling away slightly out of sync, the different lazy wafts of smoke not quite coinciding.

Thank you for that vote Clifford. No one will be pretending the RB has a V8 motor, so I see your point.

I think I'll see what the standard pipe looks like before I decide. I suspect it will be perfectly good, but a little bit of me would like to keep some of the RB's history - even the slightly naff bits :-)

The twin tailpipes are purely cosmetic Alan so in terms of keeping the RBs history and character, i'd keep it. It also looks like the tailpipe was shortened to accomodate it so might be easier (and save truncating your new tailpipe) to just fit the standard single tailpipe.
Alternatively, retain your old tailpipe complete with trims and fit it to the new box.

As for the argument about twin pipes from the engine back, most V8s have a crossover piece in the middle of the system somewhere so both sides are linked, V6s sometimes do and other V6s simply have a Y piece that joins both banks then exit through a twin tail-piped back box.

All depends on the car for the original design, entirely up to you whether you keep the twin tailpipe trim or buy a new one on fleabay :

Just one of umpteen universal twin tailpipe trims!

Alan: ~
Another forum post exists regarding the rear box & rust etc. - it just involved drilling a small drain hole in the box – central and just enough to allow condensation out. The middle box is also reasonable priced.
Should your car be fitted with the “S” shape tail pipe? Rather than the 90 degree bend-I found this type initially made a lot of condensation on the rear screen so went back to the snake!
Regards Bob
