Default Tailgate/boot issues? This might help

Evening all

Credit to VolvoSweden on YouTube for this, but this is a great video he’s made (available in Russian too) for the frequently seen tailgate issue on the P3

I myself have this issue, and I know of many others that have VERY similar symptoms. I covered my connections in contact cleaner and it’s worked well for a good few months, but mine is now randomly ignoring the external handle! So I’ll do this within the next few days if I get a chance.

So if you have a tailgate/boot that won’t close/open/respond/indicates open when closed/indicates closed when open/slow wiper/odd warning lights.....this might be worth a look!

Is anyone getting random "alarm system needs service" messages due to this or assosciated wiring fault? I get the message and even got it while the engine was running and I got out and opened the tailgate and closed it and came back to find the message. I did not get the tailgate open warnings though, but it might not be the same switch which triggers the alarm. Best check a schematic I guess.

Not seen that personally in my P3, but this is a more common issue seen in older models. It's often the battery in the alarm box.

I had this warning and it was a dying alarm siren unit. The battery inside dies. Apparently it is possible to break the unit open and replace the battery but it is not a Volvo approved procedure and dealers just replace the whole thing.

I replaced the cells already but that did not cure it. Recently with the engine running, I got out the car to get somethig out of the back and opened the hatch, closed it, came back to find the alarm system warning. I am thinking a switch or cabling fault somewhere being disturbed by the rear hatch opening and closing. I should get Vida out to check the specific code.

There is a known tailgate earth wire fault for which Volvo have issued a technical sheet but this YouTube video from VolvoSweden shows exactly how to fix it. The fault can cause all manner of problems for tailgate mounted equipment and even if it turns out not to be the cause of your problem, you won't have wasted your time replacing the faulty connection as it is a worthwhile preventative measure. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PRIUBEqEgAA
