Volvo S40 2005 suspension work - recommendations?
Hi guys,
I need to replace lower control arms and wheel bearings on both front sides. I have all technical aspects covered, btw. Any recommendations for good and trusted brands? Good or bad experiences with part warranties? I don't want to ruin my wallet, obviously! Thanks in advance, cheers. |

I have Febi Bilstein control arms. Good quality, very happy with them for last 20k miles or so. No sign of aging on the rubbers whatsover.
for wheelberaings I would go with SKF. both are available on most part websites and are priced reasonable. |

Hi,
I fitted Febi Bilstein control arms 18 months ago and they seemed great. However I've just failed an mot with excessive play on the front wheel. I jacked the car up and had a look myself and there is definite play in the wheel. Is this likely to be the control arm ball joint (it did look like it when I waggled the wheel). And if so, is my easiest remedy just to replace the arm again? I've only done about 10000 miles since replacing them. Could it be something else? The other struts/parts seem ok. Thanks for any suggestions... Steve |

Whilst there are a few areas that can wear if there is noticable play at the wheel you should be able to see or feel what's loose.....
When you fitted the control arms were only fully tightened with the cars full weight on the wheels? Apparently if the bolts are tightened with the car up in the air the bushes aren't loaded and will wear quickly. |
