Lock-up only works on 4th gear (overdrive). If engine load increases sufficiently, the clutch re-opens and the torque converter is allowed to slip again to give that required torque multiplication. |

Thanks for the replies. Yes Dave I tried your technique and it works very well, fluid is now ruby red and the gearbox functions perfectly. Regarding a manual box I have considered this but it seems more work than I can be dealing with at the moment. Life has really been turned upside down for our family in 2020 and continues into 2021... I was hoping by buying this used box I have some form of safety net for when or hopefully if the current one fails.
It sounds as if it would be ok fitment wise. Or that's the vibe I'm getting anyway |

When you get as old as myself and Dave (sorry Dave lol) your priorities change.....
Having said that, we've both run a 760 V6 and we never had the choice with that particular engine - it was the only one used in the 700/900 range that was never available with a manual gearbox at any point. |

I've got nothing against auto boxes and have found the modern 6 and 8 speed ones to be very good, but nothing on earth would persuade me to have one in my 940

On my other beast, lock-up is available in 2nd, 3rd and 4th and has 3 stages, off, half and full. During engine braking it cycles through off-half-full lock-up to improve engine braking, in normal driving it often engages halfway to allow some torque multiplication before finally locking up completely. This improves economy and reduces engine loading, particularly around the 2000rpm and 4000rpm points where the intake runners change length to further improve torque/efficiency/power. Quote:
Mark is actually 4 years older than me Kev............... I believe in other countries a manual was an option, just not here in the UK. For anyone really intent on converting a 760 V6 to manual, assuming they could find a donor car, the Peugeot 505 V6 STi, 604 V6 GTi, Talbot Tagora V6 and maybe a Citroen or two would yield the drivetrain parts. Pedal box etc would have to come from other 7/9xx cars though. That said i can't understand why anyone would want to............... Quote:
Also have you considered the crank pulley as being a source of your whizzy/buzzy noise? Often the rubber damper between the front and rear halves of the pulley deforms and causes an imbalance which creates a strange noise. Also try slipping the belts off the alternator and PAS pumps to isolate those as sources of the noise.

I'm 41 and I wouldn't want a manual 940. Like my Auto 940. Also have an auto Auris Hybrid. CVT noisy in hard acceleration, but quiet once up to speed.
Had autos for 15 years now, except a Lexus IS 220D 6 speed manual a few years ago now. Far prefer auto in traffic! Drove 340, 740, Toyota Corolla, manual prior to auto. Then looked for a Volvo and Sister found me a 1989 240GLT auto estate for £250. Stayed auto since. My Dad said get an auto as less chance of being ragged as automatically changes up! James |
