Default AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION FAULT?????

Hi friends,
I wonder if anyone can help me, I have a 1993 855 2.0 20v auto with 145,000 miles on the clock. I have a rather nasty noise from the near side and think it maybe my transmission (I hope not). Anyway this is what happens, I start the car and pull away slowly the vehicle shifts in to 2nd gear then after about 3 seconds I can hear a crunch from the near side of the vehicle this only happens once if you stop the car (not the engine) and move away again its fine. You can stop as long as you like, shift to neutral, shift to park or even reverse the car, when you pull away its fine. BUT, if you switch the engine off and pull away it dose it again and it dose it every time you switch off and pull away again.
It seem the slower you accellerate the louder it is. It seems to be about the time the gearbox locks up in 2nd.
Can anyone give me any advice please or is it time to traid the old girl in I hope not!!!!!!!!!
Any advice would be very very much appreciated, thank you.
D10 Steven John Malkin.

You can pass it on to me for a pittance since it's obviously on it's last legs :-)

I think what you're hearing is the ABS self-check. It checks itself the first time you touch around 20mph after the engine has been switched off, and the ABS gubbins is located in the nearside engine bay.

It sounds like a sort of "crunch" I suppose, but I'd say it was more like a deep mechanical "flick" sort of noise. Not an indication your gearbox is on the way out, it's actually a reassuring noise to hear!

Trust this advice is not too depressing!

Hi,

from what you describe it does sound very much like the ABS self test. Does the sound always happen when you first pass about 20mph after switching off the engine?

If so it's the ABS.

Hope this helps
