xc 60 awd rear diff oil leak 100k miles

Hi , just had my 2010 xc 60 2.4 awd mot and had an advisory on rear diff oil leak...its not dripping but signs of oil on it apparantly ...garage says can be an costly fix £2500 ...anyone have info on this ,many thanks

Good god, what are they going to do for £2,500. Replace the whole backend?

I know it seems like a lot of money for a dif leak... Not sure if he meant that is what Volvo would charge for a new dif fitted... Theres a guy on ebay doing refurbs on them for £1000 including removing and refitting... Not sure what to do?. The oil was changed in dif with the 100k major service so im hoping its just spillage...

If it's just some staining and not actually dripping oil I wouldn't do anything. It's not a problem.

Just keep an eye on it and if it develops into a more serious leak then you can look at options.


I've notice a trend over the last couple of years on MOTs that Advisories for non consequential items are becoming more prevalent. I don't know why.

(The big one seems to be corroded springs - aren't they all corroded?)

Mine has had advisories for the past two MOTs for rusty rear springs and one of them snapped at the weekend 18 months after the first advisory

I would recommend checking the diff oil level if possible or even change the oil making sure the right level is present. Any weep always deserve a little preventative inspection.

yeah advisories seem to be ridiculous at the moment ..and it failed on a rear spring...will be taking it to indi volvo specialist for assesment ...cheers all

You don’t always need the services of volvo, whether dealership or independent. Many good garages exist out there too. I use one that will use volvo parts if that’s what I specify and I always do. There is nothing mystical about a volvo, other makes today have all the same gadget and gizmos. When you get to 8 years plus in my view there is no need to pay Volvo prices, example, recently mine went to volvo main dealership for seatbelt recall and mot, it came out with two broken rear springs, requiring a full set of rear end bushes, all for the princely sun of £980 + vat, oh and no mot. They would need 3 days before they could get it in and the bushes where a huge job requiring specialist equipment.
I drove it to my local garage and within 4 hours had new springs and bushes fitted, plus a new mot (all genuine volvo parts) for under £300. The same garage also replaced both my aux and cam belts plus pulleys and tensioners (106800 miles) for under £240.

Some Volvo dealers will say there's a leak when the engineering term is it's "sweating" - i.e. there's a film of oil on the casing but nothing dripping. This is fine in normal service and should be occasionally monitored.

My sister had a 2002 V70 and when it was 7 years old with 110k on the dealer said it needed a new power steering pump and red flagged it on the health check. 7 years later when she sold it - still have the same pump.

With ant diff/gearbox/engine leak you would be seeing deposits on your drive if it was serious.

But keep a regular check on it.... if it does need attention a indie would likely fit new seals at 10%-20% of that cost perhaps.

I recently had an oil seal replaced on my 2012 xc70 on the rear diff. Driveshaft pinion seal. It was leaking badly. Independent volvo specialist charged £164 i think it was.
