For all of those suffering stop-start issues or other battery charge state issues: get yourself a CTEK Battery Sense

I have one in my MY2009 XC90, which during these Corona times is only used once a week.

This allows me to get real live data to my iPhone (via Bluetooth), and see a graph, and see how the battery charge is slowly depleting over time as the car is sitting there unused. i just walk past my car once a week and let my phone update the data. I don't even have to unlock the car.

I use the battery charge state to make a decision as to when to connect my 5A intelligent charger to top up the battery.

This way, I have never let my battery get below 75% charge, and I can see also immediately how much charge has been put back into the battery from my drive. Some days I'll start off with an 80% charge, but a 30 minute drive only manages to charge the battery by 2 or 3 percent (because the energy used to start the big D5 lump of an engine is quite high).

If the car is in use every 2 or 3 days, then the battery charge state stays at close to 100%.

If the car is used once a week, then the battery charge state drops to around 80% and tends to stay around that value.

If the car is used once a month, then the battery charge state drops to somewhere between 60% and 80% and then you need to be careful any make sure you recharge every now and then.

The CTEK Battery Sense takes a bit of time to learn your battery charge state, but after a week or so it works well.

And it gives you a lot of peace of mind.

Thumbs up

The V60 (and others) have a battery life counter in the ECU, as the car gets older and the the battery gets older, the car seems to become overly touchy about the potential capacity of the battery.

I was getting this after two or three minutes of radio only switched on on my 7 year old D6.

I replaced the 12V battery and the problem still remained.

I found a combination of actions that reset the life counter mentioned above and the problem has not reoccurred in over a year.

Incidentally, the battery from the V60 is now in my C70 and has never given me a days trouble.

So the logical assumption would be that if you have the battery properly tested and it comes back as good, then trying the life counter reset means you have nothing to lose.

This is my opinion and you would try this at your own risk.

PS you don't need Vida or a dealer to do it.

About 6 months ago I reconditioned/charged the battery using a ctek m200 over a 24hr period then did the battery monitor reset. The stop start worked again but only for a week or so, unless it'd had a run of a few hours or more then it would be available for a day or so.

I rarely have access to 230v what with me living on a boat so needed a better solution.
To solve the issue of stop/start being unavailable due to low battery I decided to install the 12v socket in the load compartment (permanent live) then use a 5w solar trickle charger which I place in either a rear quarter window or on load cover (whichever is more exposed to sunlight).

So for the grand sum of £20 and 1 hour of my time the stop start is working each and every time and has been for the last 2 weeks since fitting the solar charger.

I have a 2013 XC60 bought just over a year ago and this was the first time I had experienced the Low Battery message. It became a bit of a pain removing the battery covers etc and I found that, using my CTEK charger with a different fitting I can plug the charger into the tow bar electrics plug. Very simple and effective and very reasonably priced. So if you have a tow bar on your cars I would highly recommend them.

Sounds very clever, except I am sure I will eventually drive away with it still connected.
