Default Drive, Park, foot brake ,handbrake.

Ok, folks when parking on a hill, what is the order of sequence. A couple of times I've parked on a hill/slope, and then have great difficulty getting the thing out of park, feels locked or jammed. Having thought about this,I think te correct thing to do , when parking on a slope, is..
pull to a stop, with footbrake, leave in gear and with foot still on the brake apply the handbrake. Then release the foot brake and let the car 'settle', then put in park.

I think I was putting into park , then applying h/b then releasing footbrake, so the car settled and put pressure on the gears somehow.

Or, am I missing something.

You've more or less answered your own question there, i've added a couple of words into your own answer which i highlighted in its entirity, my words only add one extra step which gives you a chance to catch the car on the footbrake if the handbrake isn't on as fully as needed.

On a more technical side, the parking pawl is a relatively tiny thing and really only designed for holding on a flat surface - on a hill the whole weight of the car is against it once it is set and the car has settled back. That's why it's so had to release it from Park!

Being honest, i have to admit to just using Park on most hills, that said most of them round here are relatively minor!

Am I right in thinking you have the electronic handbrake ?

Pretty certain they were but Dave's answer had me guessing. I normally stop then go into park with my foot on brake and then put handbrake on. It automatically releases fine when I drive off

Mine was a general answer for whatever handbrake type Mark, also the way i understood things the OP was having trouble shifting out of Park when the handbrake wasn't used on a hill, just the Park function in the gearbox which is only a relatively small pawl and ratchet affair.

it's going in next Tues, to let them have a wee look, it also pulls to the left, despite them doing a full four wheel alignment. Hope that's nothing sinister, still I've only had it 3 weeks now, and its got 11+ months Volvo Selekt warranty.

Have you checked your tyre pressures? That could be a cause of pulling to the left. Also after a run, check the temperature of each wheel carefully by hand to see if any are hot, if so that suggests a sticky brake caliper that would also cause pulling.

When i say carefully, don't just slap your hand on the wheel, get your hand close to see if you can feel heat being radiated from it first!

Don't want to be responsible for you paying a visit to Death Vallay A&E (Darenth Valley) with a burned paw!

Some warmth is ok, if you have one that is outstandingly hot then you may have a sticky caliper.

Just a little tip that may be handy for the hills...

Start the car, put your seat belt on & put the transmission into in D.

The handbrake will still remain engaged until you press on the accelerator (providing it was engaged in the first place of course) & the car will remain stationary.

As soon as you press the accelerator, the handbrake releases itself automatically & the car will begin to move.

**Your seatbelt must be on though, as it won't work otherwise.
