All i know is, the 185 WILL use a fair bit more in fuel.
my extra urban is under 30mpg, i can get it just over 35mpg as long as i drive like Morgan Freeman. Drive like i really want to im looking at mid 20's... Ive see posts where the 163 does late 40's, i think it was, it matches my old Laguna... Tax is about £29 a month. Insurance about £24 a month with max NCD 20+ years (only 9 years are useable)

My Euro 3, with a dodgy injector, boost leaks, a slightly sticky caliper and 430,000 miles is currently averaging 39.8 MPG.
I still find the engine nicely powerful, even though there's no way its putting out the full 163bhp or 340nm with the abforementioned issues. Euro 3 is the place to be. |

I've had 3 D5's over the last 12 years.
2 were 185 E4 and 1 was a 163 E3. Whilst neither of the 185's have ever given me a problem with the DPF, I would still prefer the simplicity of the E3 engine . If I could have an E3 D5 in my 2007 XC90 it would in my opinion make a good car better.👍

Partially, but generally, euro 4 engines are heavier on fuel than the older euro 3's.

The older shapes would have been "P2" cars.

Just to chime in, 2006 d5 v70 (185bhp). I'm averaging 41.4 mpg at the moment. I mix between driving miss daisy when on the motorway (infrequently) and giving it something to write home about in the Oxon twisties.
The engine is very sweet when you need it, can't fault it. |
